imho you should not be scheptical , there are several reasons for that:
1st BOTH DELIVERY SYSTEMS relies on the same base data supplied by the same provider in this case Clear Channel's Total Traffic Network.
2nd They are only the Delivery method , they have nothing to do with the traffic info itself, they just delivery it through two different systems.
3rd Cellphone coverage is better and covers almost the entire country while the FM signal only covers certain area depending on factor such as Antena height , Transmiter power and so on.
4rd last but not least , the RDS_TMC standard broadcasted via FM has some limitations due to the nature of the FM signal , bandwith of only 6 mhz, therefore they can only broadcast certain amount of data like only 300 traffic events at any time (enough for now by the way), do not support the transmition of the actual flow speed, can not send extra text or data info. On the contrary the Cellphone internet based service tomtom plus could potentially send whatever amount of data they want , the catch is that you have to pay to download that extra info to your cell provider.
It is true that most phones do not allow data and voice conn at the same time but think about , first while you drive safetywise you are not suppose to have lengthy conversations over the phone even with a handsfree option so as soon after you hang up , tomtom can download the next traffic update and usually it only takes a few seconds.
but again this is a free country and anyone can do whatever they want.
