I tried updating my working gps yesterday, but something went wrong - I received
error writing mctx.dat, so it wouldnt complete update.

I then had flashing red x when unplugged from pc

I have read various suggestions, and what I have tried is the following

1. copy entire contents onto pc for back up (inc hidden folders)
2. tried running chkdsk - wouldnt work
3. removed all files from the unit - except mctx.dat which wouldnt remove
4. run chkdsk which then removed the file and created FOUND file (with .chk files created) on the device

I am now left with a device which has around 1.5meg of .chk files which cant be removed, and therefore I cant reinstate the device file either through tt home or by copying back as there is insufficient memory.

Have I done something fatal??

The device still detects when plugged in and is accessible through explorer.

The important thing is you made the backup. Now, format the unit, don't use quickformat. Then restore the backup you made and see if things are ok.

Update

Format worked - failed first time.

This may sound weird - but I think it was the USB cable I was using

I couldnt find the original tomtom cable, but was using a flimsy cable from something else.

When I swapped it to a thicker USB cable the format worked.

I have lost the red x, and tomtom home is installing new files as we speak.

My only concern is re-installing the maps, which I hope I have backed up ok...

I am now thinking the cable was the issue all along

I may be back on for further advice....:thumb:

Not weird at all...... while in theory any usb cable should work, in fact not using the provided one can cause various issues....... like the computer (and/or Home) not recognizing the device.

The red X usually signifies the unit can't find or interpret the app already installed.

Let us know how things go.......

I dont have a back up of my maps via tthome, and I havent downloaded them from tthome either

What I have is a copy and paste version of all the files on my C: when the unit decided to display the red x (which is now gone)

Is it possible to just copy and paste back on to the device?

If not - am I stuffed????
