I just picked up this unit and like it alot however, when you setup the POI's it only shows an X. Is this right? I thought it would at least give a symbol of a motel or something.

The "X" is really a knife and fork that represents the Restaurants POIs. Some POIs have a more representative icon like the 'Golden Arches" for McDonalds, but many of them use the symbols that are the nationally recognized symbols (like the ones for firehouses, campgrounds, etc).

For the POIs that come with the TomTom you are stuck with what they give you . If you create your own POIs, you can give them any icon you want as my writeup describes below:
