Hi, I sold my old GPS which ws principly for trecking in country. I have a XL now and although it is great for motering around in streets can it be used in country and how?

There are lots of places I like to stop on a trip and explore into an area. which is unknown to me. and not on the installed map. Trecking in the bush especially in the mountains can lead to danger. Australia has a lot of remote areas. That although I take an orienteering compass with me you can walk a long way to find your way and there are often no trails.

I have not tried it yet. but can think to set positional points and a home point which would at least point me in the right direction. I was wondering if there is a document explaining using it this way for trecking. Fully charged it gives me a 2 hour window to correct my orienteering.

Mobile phones have little or no coverage a few 100 km from towns. ans saterlite phones are bulky and expensive.

The best thing I can suggest is for you to send a pm to canderson, our expert on lots of things, including using his unit for geocaching. Considering that TomToms really are meant for on road planning, if anyone knows how to push the limits, it would be he.
