Safety Camera service

That may be worth a shot. Perhaps I'll try later today, mvl.

Well........now that I think of it, not sure that would be a good thing to try as I don't want to register my 720 with a second email account. You know the issues you had when information got screwed up between 2 units (not the same scenario, I know, just saying .....).

I have another theory, mvl.

I do have a safety_camera.ov2 downloaded from somewhere on my unit. Maybe it won't dl from TT because of the conflict there. I highly doubt it but I can muse about it ....:)

I also have another theory that I'm going to try tonight.

HOME never offered me the free safety cameras until I got my 930. Perhaps the safety cameras only download on a 930, and then once on your computer they install to any other device connected to your computer. I'll play around with this a bit tonight.

HOME tells me that I have AT, BE, DE, ES, FI, FR, IT, NL, NO, PT and SE on my computer and offers to [Add] them to my 930. I also tells me that I have UK on my SD card (2008-May-22) and then offers me to [Buy] Oz and Brazil as well as a 1 year subscription each to Europe and South Africa.

In the UK map I just set up an A .. B between Hapsford on the M56 and Northop on the A55 at the English /Welsh border where, at the end of the M56 through the construction site, I had a speed camera alert in June 2008 and saw a flash at two spots and got charged for one. Running the Demo I got nothing.
I cannot find anything in the Preferences to dis- or engage safety cameras and there is no POI listed in the Show POI on map.
My W&CE folder does have the three files
Safety__Cam_UK_TomTom.ov2
Safety__Cam_UK_TomTom.ov2.dct
Safety__Cam_UK_YomTomOv2.ver (proper spelling)

Mike Alder, if you read this could you clarify if the safety cameras can be invoked in Demo mode.
Cheers,

I use the PocketGPSWorld database rather than the TomTom offering, I will have to load the files back on to one of my units to see if TomTom's database actually works in demo mode (I know the PGPSW offering certainly does) - Mike

So my theory was right.

The USA/Canada free safety cameras are only available on the 930 (maybe the 920, too). Once downloaded for the 930, it is available for any model Tomtom under "add safety cameras" as a free install from "My computer" within HOME.

I had no problems installing on my 720 from the copy on my oomputer. And HOME would continue to provide daily camera updates just like it does for quickgpsfix and mapshare.

But once I went to "Manage my GO" and removed it from the 720 device AND my Computer, it didn't show up for the 720 under "add safety cameras" any longer.

So it looks like Tomtom intended this to be only available for the 930 (and maybe 920).

Mike,
Don't go out of your way to do that. Here in Ontario we do have red light cameras but no speed cameras.

I will not visit the UK this year (maybe not next year either) and at that time I will look at PockeGPSWorld.

Thanks, Arno

Look at my post 2010-Feb-01 08:23 above. In May/June 2008 I downloaded the ALL European Speed Cameras but no North Americans.

Now, with my 930, I am only offered the paid ones.

What do you do to have HOME offering you free ones.

safety cameras warn you in demo mode. you configure the warnings under tomtom services. i ran demos in boston and toronto and they worked fine. every camera i spot checked was a redlight cam, but maybe thats because there's so few fixed speedcams here.

i didnt do anything special they just showed up in home. let me see tonight if they are still available on my 930

Safety Camara works on 730 for Sure.
However when I updated the Maps to 840 it quiet working for me.
When I called the TomTom Support they said it is half as support due to we do not charge for the services etc etc ..........
When I got GPS first it worked for me I have to enable from POI option
Then I upgraded 8.3 and it worked.
When they replace the GPS and got my GPS updated to 840 Map it quit again.
I had to copy files from 830 backup as dhn suggested.
I think problem is 840 MAPS

I didn't think we were talking about paid services.
It is asking for a user name and a wireless data connection.

The warnings only show up if you don't have a safetycamera file loaded.

I just checked and the camera initialization file is not being offered with 8.302. I didn't want to install and uninstall, but maybe you need 8.351 to get the initialization file. Once HOME gives you the file, you can then proceed to downgrade the app and the cameras will still work.

Without the files downloaded TT thinks you have to pay in PLUS services. Once it's downloaded it works in PLUS, I don't know if it still asks for user/pass just to get to the screen, because I have my user/pass loaded for my broken traffic, and for my functioning fuel prices.

I only got the UK cameras loaded but they are on the W&CE map on the SDHC card.

I am saving this post for the time that a new OS will allow the use of the remote on the phone book again.
We don't seem to have fixed speed cameras in the Toronto area and the Red Light cameras are well posted. One of the rare instances where the safety aspect out ranks revenues.

I still think you are not being asked because you have the PLUS subscription working for your fuel prices.

Does anyone else in North America with a lesser than X40 device have safety cameras working without paying?
