TT HOME is a desktop application for your PC or Mac. It allows you to backup, restore, and get the latest updates. I would recommend getting as the latest firmware update allows you to get QuickGPSFix, which allows for faster Satellite lock.

2) What is an SD card and do I need it to download the new map update?

Sounds like you have the the new TT1's that don't come with and SD card. Assuming you do, you really don't need it as the internal memory has the USA/Canada maps and enough space for custom POI's and voices.

3) Do I need to use the SD card to download POI?

No. I believe you should just be able to download the POI's straight to the internal memory.

I would definitely recommend backing up the unit before you do anything. The maps that come with the unit are very important and if you lose that and have no backup, you may end up having to purchase a new set of maps.
