New to GPS

I'm thinking of buying a GPS and have a question about the voice prompts; does the TomTom One announce the street names; ie, "turn left at Oak street", or does it state, "turn left in 100 ft" ??

It does the latter, "Turn left in 100ft".

If you want Text-To-Speech (TTS) the models you are looking for is the 910,720, and 920. Those announce the street names.
