TomTom Model(s)
Go Classic
Hi All

I'm new to the forum so be gentle. I have a Tom Tom Classic, it was the first model that Tom Tom sold, I have an issue in that after an hour it 2 the touch screen just goes wild, it thinks someone is pressing the screen and can replay a route, avoid road blocks and even set a new destination. With is is mind I believe it needs a new screen/touchscreen.

My question is this, will a screen for/from a Tom tom go 520, 530,720,730 etc fit the Classic.

Kind regards

Nelix

Likely nothing wrong with the touch screen itself.

Since it's a function of time, it's probably actually a function of temperature. As the bezel surrounding the touch screen warms up, it deforms slightly (something all shaped plastics that are injection molded are prone to doing to some degree or another, but some more than others), and yours probably starts to make contact with the touch screen, creating 'phantom' button presses. It used to be reported more here frequently, but it seems TomTom has sorted this pretty well in the more recent models.

Sometimes, this is exacerbated by crud that has worked its way in between the bezel and the touch screen. Working a business card in around under the bezel all the way around is one way to try to clear that kind of gunk out. It's a good place to start, anyway, and should be attempted before doing anything more radical. The next 'more radical' step would be to pull the bezel (if the Classic allows for this - I've never taken one apart) and clean what you find, and if that still doesn't get it ... leave the bezel off and drive it for a few days to determine whether or not the problem is strictly related to bezel contact.

Thanks canderson

I thought it may be temperature related as well due to it only happening after an amount of time. I have taken the tom tom apart and cleaned the bezel, I was also able to remove the rubber surround of the screen and clean all of that too, now I just need a long journey to test it out, I am going to Leeds in a week or so and will test it then and report back.

Thanks again.

Let us know how you make out. Does that original model allow for operation without the bezel, or would the guts all fall out?

The bezel can be removed without the guts falling out as they are secured with 4 screws. I'll report back in a week or so after I have tested it.

well, after a 2hour trip to Leeds and the same back I can confirm that the issue appears to have been resolved. All working as it should without any 'phantom' screen presses.

Thanks for the tip, seems to have worked a treat and saved me buying a new screen/satnav.

Thanks again

Nelix

Good to hear that's all that was wrong, but sorry to hear that one of these older models had the issue. So are you able to operate with bezel in place now, or was your test with bezel off the whole time?

Well, I'm sorry to say that my "Phantom" presses have returned. Does anyone know of a good supplier of screens for this device?

Cheers

Back to the previous experiment, Nelix. If removing the bezel solves the problem, then there's nothing wrong with the touch screen -- it's the contact with the screen that's causing the problem, and if cleaning doesn't help, this indicates that the bezel itself is deformed/deforming enough to cause the contact. Installing a new touch screen won't solve that.

I have removed the bezel and it is still the same so looks like either a new unit or just replace the screen.

I love this version of the TomTom as I have an external aerial and the dash/screen mount means that I don't have to plug it in and out every time I put it on the mount along with power as both the power and aerial are plugged into the mount. The newer units don't appear to have this feature which would just be too fiddly to have to do every time you want to use it.

If I cant get a new screen then I will be trawling eBay for a 500/700 so I can use the same mount

Some of the newer units get their traffic update via Bluetooth form ones cell phone and have a magnetic mount for easy, on handed snap on and off.
