My first GPS purchase- 1st post!

I keep hearing this "ONE upgrade of the map within your 30 day window".

Out of curiosity, how (not when) does the 30 day window start?

Assuming TomTom units can sit on the retail store shelf for a while, just how does the 30 day window start?

When the unit is purchased is the serial number scanned and e-sent back to TomTom by the Retail store?

The device " birthday " starts when you first turn on the device.

If someone buys a returned / opened / or refurbished device....they may need to call TomTom and email / fax them a copy of the purchase receipt.
