If I get the latest map do I have to have a sd card? Mine is taped over from the factory. And does it erase the old map and then install the new one?

No it will overwrite the older version. If you buy maps (not the the same as upgrading your old one), then space will become an issue. The seal is to prevent junk from getting into the device. if you choose to purchase a card (I bought one to store mp3 files), then you simply remove it.

Word of advise first! Make a good backup NOW! That's the most important thing you can do. Then almost anything you do can be undone.

If you get an SD card you can have both maps. You can have the old one one the internal memory and the new one on the SD card. You can also buy a large SD card (4gb+) and have everything on it and nothing on the internal memory. That way you could have the larger POI set to it if you wanted.
