How do I get spoken commands?

I have purchased a 1.9 version of the Tom Tom app which is successfully installed on my 3gs iPhone. But I have no sound from it, including no spoken commands. Have tried everything I can think of. Any ideas?

Is it docked into a TT car docking kit or just in the car in a holder?
