Custom Map(s)

Hi,

I have been reading about maps on this forum and what I can gather is that these files are to be downloaded from the web and simply copied into device folder(s). So, are all these files produced by a company which makes TomTom? What I mean to ask is: can I actually create the map file myself? Is the format of a map file a proprietary information or the format is disclosed? If it is: can I get a link to the map file format?

The vector maps normally used on a TomTom are indeed proprietary in nature, and nobody seems to have found the magic decoder ring that would explain how they're formed. So a custom vector map isn't a possibility.

The much more crude raster map approach is possible, but you can't use them for routing ... they're just 'pictures' that overlay the actual map. That is explained, more or less, here:
http://create.tomtom.com/manuals/create-your-own-content/index.html?map_overlays.htm

and there's a site to help you create them here:
http://users.telenet.be/dirkroos/tomtom_staticmap.html

How useful any of that may be to you will depend a lot upon the nature of what you're trying to create.
