I run my TomTom 720 off off a 4GB external card.
If I remove the card and let it run off the internal card,
then later run it off of the external card I have to go through
menu options as though it was the first time I was setting up.
Have to setup the Bluetooth connections from start.

Once a TomTom is configured to the way you like it do the settings
get saved to the drive?

I wanted to be able to run off the external card except
when running Tomplayer on a different external card but it's
a pain once I return to the external card with the nav stuff on it.

You can try running the flash tool to see if it helps.
However, it sounds like you are running the navcore software on your internal memory and SD card. Your SD card should only be an extension to your device. Is this how you have it set up?

SD Card

I installed an 8 gig SD card on my TT 720 and got everything screwed up. Everytime I connected it to Home, it would ask me what I wanted to load, so I would choose 8 gig sd card. Wow things got a crazy when I would turn it off and then back on. I finally removed everything from the SD card, then removed the SD card and let Home do it's thing, (updates and all) and now I merely have ONLY MP3 files on the SD card. Everything seems to be a lot happier. This all happened due to VERY POOR documentation.....It seems that TomTom has good sofware engineers but poor product managers. Very incomplete documentation.

External SD card

I copy the complete internal card to my external SD card.
Then I used HOME and upgraded from my earlier App of 7.221 and map
of 710 to the latest 8.3 and 8.15 map. This fixed my missing VR
and everything worked great. When I remove the card and let it boot
off the internal then re-boot off the external I loose my settings and
have to re connect bluetooth to my phone and set up my car icon, etc.

Do a backup first of your SD card.

1. Load the SD card into TomTom
2. Use your computer to format the SD card
3. Restart Home
5. The TomTom will ask which you wish to use (say the SD card)
6. Go ahead and let it update (mine placed the mp3, voices folder on the card along with a couple of other files)
7. Then just use as you normally would.
