TomTom Model(s)
XXL 540
Been setting sense 2019 when I see some folders were updated then on the device.
Battery holds a good charge
Unit not damaged keep in closet in original box.

I got it out charged it, and it is stuck in a boot loop.
I get the drum sounds, logo shows a hard drive and the line goes through the process.
then after some time it does the process over again logo hard drive working then some time does it again.

I ran a scan and no errors were found on the drive.
I connected it to the computer did all updates. ( now folders say 2024 ) were updated.
still stuck in a boot loop.
Did soft reset get the drum sounds so its resetting.

I understand maps won't be updated to the latest, I'm not worried about that.

What's the next steps to get this out of the boot loop, not sure why just being off stored in a box would do that to it.

Thanks for your help

Attached is the photo after the updates.

The XXL 540 can no longer be updated via Tomtom Home.

the solution you must have a backup on your computer reinstalled this backup on your GPS.

That computer is long gone no back up.

So it did update from Home software. New files were downloaded and now some files and folders say 2024. It did download and update. still in a boot loop.

Seems to me if I can get the original files I can format the TOMTOM then install the files.

TomTom should have an archive of original files somewhere.

Let me know,

Your 540 has been declared end of life by Tomtom so there are no more files to download from Tomtom Home.

Before connecting your GPS to Home you will need to make a backup.

How to contact TomTom customer support by chat or email

I understand TOMTOM wants people to buy a new GPS so they can get money to only discontinue it again... to get people to buy a new one....lol asking Tom Tom is like the home program says... here is a link to buy a new unit.

Most of the time someone will have files they give out to older units like this to get them working to the last update.

I have Garmin GPS that was not working, got a file and now it works.

Wishful thinking on my part.

@RichardDean

It's unlikely that you'll need new firmware.

A suggestion that often helped in the 'old days' for Nav2 boot loops:
Locate a file called mapsettings.cfg. It will be located in your USA_Canada (or similar name) map folder.
Copy that file somewhere to your PC (in case you'll want any data from it later) and then delete just that file on your 540.
Now try to reboot and see what it does.

If that is unsuccessful, I can provide you with access to the 9.051 firmware for your device directly from TomTom - if that proves necessary. Willy underestimates our methods here! After that, Home should provide one subsequent firmware update to get past the old GPS satellite week-number-rollover issue that had to be dealt with a few years back.

There were a couple of XXL models released. If yours has 2GB native memory, it will likely have a serial number that starts with RX, and we'll in the future talk about that as an XXL2009. If your unit has 4GB native memory, it will likely have a serial starting with RZ, and we'll talk about that as an XXL2010. It will matter in order to get the correct firmware, and we should know in any case. Please confirm which XXL 540 you have.

Thank you so much,

I did not see mapsettings.cfg on the drive. I looked in the maps folder and the united states folder.
Also did a search of the disk using the search tool by full name and also just any files .cfg nothing.

Mine is the RX 2GB

attached is the drive images

I know you've already done it, but please check again. The mapsettings.cfg file contains, among other things, whatever configuration was set up through the settings menus and its corruption is often the reason for endless reboot cycles. It would be very odd if it were missing. It should indeed be the only *.cfg file on the device.

Now, if you would please open a file in the root of your device named ttgo.bif with your favorite vanilla text editor and check for the following line about 8 lines down in the file:

ApplicationVersionVersionNumber=????

What are the numbers showing where I've placed the ????

No ttgo.bif file

ANYthing in the root called something.bif???
If not, it's as though this device has never been booted up.
I'm beginning to wonder what else may be missing from this device.

If you're handy from a command prompt

DIR /S {your 540's drive letter - no braces}: > dirinfo.out

Zip up the resulting dirinfo.out file and post it here, please.

? When you say "4h 30 min been on cline.dat", what does this mean?
Is the device updating?
Yes, the cline.dat file is around 1GB in size. It contains the map geometry.

I'd also be interested in the contents of that install.bif file.

Oh wow. Wasn't asking for the entire actual content of your device, just the list of the content, hence the DIR /S recommendation. Still, I'll have a look - once it downloads!

Somewhat strange (to me, anyway) path in that link.

What link? the money hitters... one of my old website. the file is too big to send on the forum it said.
I don't like drop box type things not when I have my own server I can upload too.
