XL 330 S - Concerns about updating map

I purchased a XL 330 S a few days ago. I tried downloading the latest map from the LMG and ended up loosing my orginal map - I got the error "no maps found". So I ended up returning it to the store because I thought it was defective and did a exchange for the same model. Now I am concerned about trying the LMG download again...

1) How did I loose my orginal map - getting the no maps found error?

2) How do I download the LMG map without getting this error again?

3) How long from start to finish for downloading maps? If I have to spend 5 hours waiting for it to download then it's not worth it.
 
Have you read the announcement at the top of the forum regarding tips for a new user? Especially the part about doing an Explorer backup??
 
Thanks for the help. I tried to update the map again from the LMG and the second unit crashed. So I ended up returning the TomTom and getting a Garmin.
