Voice command and traffic

I've been using TomTom software on my PDA for a while. I'm now considering getting a dedicated device but can't determine the info that I want from the TomTom site. I like the idea of voice command, which points me at the GO540/740/940, but when I check compatability of those devices with my mobile phone, it shows no TomTom services against these devices. Does that mean that all of the services somehow get directly to the device rather than via my phone? Is this via HD Traffic? If so, as I'm a technical person at heart, how does the traffic information get to the device?

The x40 models have a built-in sim card. You pay tomtom a monthly fee that includes the LIVE / traffic services and the data subscription on the sim.
