"start europe 42 countries" bug with maps

hello
I recently bought a tomtom startEurope 42 countries.
When I want to update the maps, it tells me its capacity is too small to download the maps of Europe (2GO). So what is the point of having purchased this if the map is not adapted to the memory of my terminal?

Any suggestion as to how this can be overcome?
thanks
Gerard

Good question.

You could first make an Explorer, not Home, backup of your unit's contents. After ensuring the backup is on your computer, delete the specific map folder from the unit.

Connect to Home and see if you can get the map update now.

BUT........

Did in fact you download the map and then get the message that there wasn't enough space when it was trying to install? If so, that's a different story and you may be able to get around that issue by not using Home.

If you just tried for the update today (or the last couple of days) and did not even get it to download, then you are lucky.......I suspect the 850 map to be released within 24-48 hours and you should be able to get that one.

In any event, report back.

start V1 or V2?

I followed their weird instructions which consisted in (i) transfering the old maps in my pc, (ii) erase them in the tomtom (iii) recopy the old ones back into the tomotom from my pc (iv) and then download the update of 2 giga into the tomtom inspite of the fact that the volume has not been modified
It worked for me, although I cannot figure out why moving back and forth a file can free up memory...
Anyway, hope my experience will help you.
According to your posting, I was unlucky to make this exercize 2 days ago, so it means I missed the last update.

I have a number of questions arising now:

1/ I still have time to change my brand new tomtom in case a better model makes sense. Is it worth changing it into start 2? I understand the processing speed is faster for the latter but that tomtom locked the possibility to download free radar maps in version 2. I am not a heavy user of tomtom so I dont know what is most valuable: openness with third party providers (but maybe dangerous because of bugs?) or calculation speed?

2/ I noticed the menu "map exploration" is a bit clumsy/whimsical: moving the map with the finger does not always yield the same effect. could it be that the responsiveness of the software is more rough for the start version?

3/ do you know if the 42 european countries version does not provide the same level of details as in the "datailed maps" sold on the tomtom website for each country?

regards
g

The start 2 offers Text To Speech which reads out road names which I find very handy, but I am not too sure it would be worth spending extra on it, if you can return/ swap the old one for a new one then fine - If you do this use a different e-mail address when you register it using TomTom Home and check this forum as to the new map release as we were expecting it to be rolled out 20/05/10 but here we are 2 days later and still nothing!

Map browsing isn't very "hot" on any of the devices, it gets better as you get used to it but its never felt quite right even on the really top end models - Mike
