THE PROBLEM:
Last night on my way from Cleveland to Pittsburgh, my 720 was working fine for about 10min on the road (mix of city streets/highways); however, in the middle of the highway drive, it just started to shuffle screens! And I’m not talking about turning the map off (that settings is OFF) or if I have “accidentally” tapped the screen – I am talking about shuffling 5-6 screens in 1-2 second period! The bottom preference (time and mileage) would highlight by itself, switch to “Preferences” menu, turn off my sound (i.e., it would just selected SOUND OFF), shuffle through some more screens, show me the planned route (the final screen after you plan your route) and I would either click on “Done” or it would finally “rest” in the “Preferences” menu. I have never experienced this before!

Since I was not able to restore it (duh), I did do soft RESET (a few times), but to no avail! It would still do that on my way back from Pittsburgh. So, I removed my SD – nothing; unplugged my radar detector – nothing; removed both SD and RD – NOTHING! “RESET” in the middle of the drive – worked for a few, but then it would go through those screens again… and finally after 45 minutes or so, it appear to be fine.

This morning, while driving, it took my RD completely off and I think that my SD was out as well… so for the first 5-10 minutes everything was fine, but then it just started to shuffle again!! My initial though that there might be some interference between the GPS and the RD (being that they are only few inches apart), but given that my RD was completely off (stored in the box), that can be ruled-out.

Obviously, I am going to try to restore it today, but has anyone ever experienced anything like this?! I love my unit, and I have not had any major problems (not being pin-point accurate seems to be the problems with maps, not unit itself) and everything works like it supposed to – until now. :(

OK - so I restored it to the day I installed v710 map as well as enabled VR and PLUS services. I took it for a quick spin around my neighborhood (probably around 3 miles or so) and it worked fine. Although BT was enabled, my phone wasn't synced. I also didn't bring my RD and the SD card was not installed (I actually formated my SD card). I still have no idea what caused it to shuffle screens and make its own selections, but as I said, so far so good. I'll take it for another test-drive later tonight probably and will report if anything does happen.

But I did notice something else... I didn't have any routes planned while driving just now, but I do have my warnings set to notify me when near a place of worship or school. On one of my daily routes, there is a church off the highway and my TT does "ring a bell" when near it and it flashes the church icon and shows it being 0.15 miles from my current location (I think that's a pretty neat feature). However, on my "test drive" just now, I drove by 2 middle schools and 1 high school (all three were off the roads I was on) and the warning didn't go off. So my question is (if anyone has used it): Will TT warn you only while you are on a planned route or is it supposed to warn you while "free driving" as well?

Was the unit's battery charged? Was it connected to a power source while in use? I haven't heard of a problem quite like this before.....

I am not familiar with the 720 having a 920. Could you be getting bluetooth interference that is mimicking the REMOTE (my 920 came with remote)? And I know nothing about Bluetooth frequencies or how various devices interact.

Never thought of that! Although I have no idea myself, that could be another option/possibility...

You are correct in that warnings only take place for a route, not free driving.
