Hello all

Im just after some really basic information, as to weather my Tomtom even works..........?

I'll cut a long story short, got from friend while on holiday in hungary, But had no SD or anything in it, no home dock, just a car charger and window sticky thing.

Turned on and symbol of a swooshing memory card, was telling me to insert a card.................
it was in very good condition, I had no reason to doubt it would work or not......

Anyway...!!! frustratingly i have it had for over a year, never got round to buying a home dock til a few days ago, and still have to buy a map yet.......?

But when ive stuck it on the home dock, and turned on, it has a screen with a green outline, an a symbol of sat-nav. but nothing about option to connect to computer, which i read on the sites trouble shooting guide.

But if i connect with the tomtom home software turned off, it shows as removeble media drive, and ask i insert disc if i click on it.

Anyhow.....! Can some one tell me am i just missing something really obvious, do i need a map on sd 1st or what.........
Is it faulty or...or.....

so frustrated, any advice please.......................

Thanks in advance !!!!

Yan

What hardware do you have, look on the base of the device for a model number and post back with this information as it will be handy to know which files to point you at for download from the server at TomTom HQ.

You will need a blank SD card, 2GB should suffice for most hings, but again depending upon the device it might be possible to increase this storage capacity if need be.

What mapping coverage do you need? - this will require you to purchase a map from TomTom via your PC using the TomTom Home software, but its far from difficult.

Answer the above questions and we should be able to assist in getting the device back up and running - Mike

Hello Mike !

Thanks for takin time to help me.....

It says on the bottom, tomtom (v400.710)
Dont have any instructions with it so dont know much more.......

From a little reserch it seem identical to the 510 in design an so on, not sure if the 710 was released in America or Canada

I could really do with some tips or a lil walk through on how to get the firmware onto the device...........:D

wonder if it will take a 4gb as right now cant locate my 2gb one........

Thanks Mike.......

any advice please

The 510 and 710 devices are the same, the only difference was the map supplied when the device was new.
For the application files that you need go to This Web page and download the TomTomGOx10 Series V7.162 unzip this to a blank SD card, being a 710 device I would suggest you only try this with a 2GB card.

Once the files and folders are on the card insert it to the device and it should report back "No Maps Found" when you switch it on. To get maps you will have to download TomTom Home to your PC and connect the device, then you can purchase a map for the PD - Mike

Wooo hoooooooo !!!!!!!!!!!!!

only took bout a year and the help of good ol Mike....????
Think were all sorted, now i just need a maps...........

Just another daft question......

I see that the map I want is a 2GB file, central and western europe. but with whats already on the memory card, i.e them files You told me to download, how will it fit.
What about the internal memory please enlighten me good sir...............:D

See here. The Western_and_Central_Europe_2GB map is specifically designed to fit the 2GB maximum SD allowed on the GO 710. It's actually 1667.8 mb, to allow space for the application and voices.

Sometimes you can find larger SD cards (not SDHC that the 710 can't read), but compatibility is hit-or-miss since the official SD spec doesn't allow for SD cards larger than 2GB.

Tomtom won't sell 710 owners any maps that take more than 2GB anyways.

Thanks for that advice.........

just one thing, no sooner do I have the thing working, apart from not having any map to try yet.........
I dont know what I did whilst in tomtom home, But When I turn it on, its ask for language selection
then handedness, an time. But after that, when voice screen comes on it has a red message box theat pops up at the top saying " can not save settings, file accsess error.

Can I delete everything on my SD card an start from scratch. just didnt wanna mess owt up.

how does the internal memory work, what gets saved on there

such a noob.................!!!!!!

HI dhn

Could you please tell me how to find out my device code please........

I have seen a step online, but that looked like it had a map already up and running, and involved pressing options I currantly dont have because I havent got a map yet..............

What other ways could I get my device code

regards Yan

Use Windows Explorer to view the contents of the memory card In the root is a file named ttgo.bif right click this and choose "Open With" and select Note Pad as he application, this file will contain your device code - What do you need this for though, as Home does all map activation? - Mike
