noob, questions

hi all. i have Navigator 6, running on a TDS Recon data collector, with a globalsat bc337 cf gps receiver to tell me where i am. so far, i have used it to navigate my way to and from work, all of 13 miles. it works very well, but i can't wait to take it on a trip where i don't already know the route. from reading the various posts here, it seems that there is a lot of customizing that can be done, but it doesn't seem that you can do it if you only have the software, like me. i don't seem to have all of the menu items that others who actually have a tomtom device seem to have. does anyone know any more about this? thanks.
