No SD Card Needed

Just bought a 920 and there is a sticker on the base covering the SD slot saying "SD card not needed" - this is shipped with N-America & W=-Europe maps but I assume that I can use the slot if I want to add mp3's and audio book?

Absolutely! And if you have firmware 8.3, the size of the sdhc card can exceed 4 gigs without issue. You can place one map on the card, one on internal, if you want as well as mp3's in both locations (in a folder called mp3), etc.

do you think it will stop the stuttering ? once in a while I get this if the turns are in quick succession?

Who knows......Nobody knows what the cause is (which is why there has been no firmware fix to rememdy the problem).
