I currently own a TTone v2 ; it has an older version v660.1215 of the US-Canada map on a SD card ; if I update to the most recent map version will the new map overwrite the old map or will I end up with two different map versions on the SD card. Thanks.

The update will write over the old map.

yes, but if you have a backup of your old map, you then have two which you could use on separate sd cards for instance.....

you can keep two version maps in one SD card, if you have enough memory space!

Wow! First I have to say thanks to all the longtime forum members for tolerating the newbies like me. There's an impressive amount of knowledge and experience on these forums and it's only because of the infinite patience of the seasoned users.

So, now that I've buttered everyone up, I need some advice regarding maps and then an answer to a couple of bedeviling questions.

FIRST: I'm contemplating a map upgrade for my recently acquired (second hand) ONE v2. Before I do it, I've been doing my research here. I've spent the night searching the threads and I'm now totally confused. First, note my signature with all my nuts 'n' bolts - ask if I can provide additional info.

I've been side-by-side testing my V2 against my mother's brand spanking new v3. She's got quite a few of the newer streets that are missing on mine. So, I gather I don't have the most up-to-date US & Canadia map. I'm hoping that going to a newer map will remedy this issue I'd like to either update to North America (though either it can or cannot be installed on my ONE - there are plenty of threads that insist on both opinions or neither) or NE regional, or a newer US & Canada. Either way, I'm upgrading to either a 2 or 4 GB SD card. I am leaning toward a 4GB upgrade and schistering North America onto it if possible. (I'd gather by purchasing from TT website, claiming I have a bigger/betterer tomtom, DL'ing to my PC's HDD then using my card reader to move it over?) Or would I simply be better off buying the new US & C OR NE regional US?? The problem is that I will be traveling to the big Waiting Room for Heaven (Florida) in the fall and Vegas in the December. The big payoff I'm looking for in upgrade/updating is:
a). To not have to drive on "the blank void" as I pass through all the fields of recently airdropped McMansions. It's killing me. The streets are on the v3!!!
b). Thorough POI coverage in the North East where I do most of my poorly planned, small lead-time traveling and often need to find hotels and stores in a pinch.
c). Sufficent coverage of the rest of the nation to not get lost going to Vegas and Florida - which are also hotbeds of rampant development.

So, opinions on what to do?

SECOND: As an afterthought - could I "borrow" my mother's US and Canada maps (ONE v3 to ONE v2) by simply slapping her US_and_canada over mine or is there more to it?

THIRD: Does Tripmaster run on ONE v2? How about Mobilnova Media Center?

FOURTH and Finally, (and sorry for the length of this post and all the questions) and this is a dumb one - could I copy the first aid instructions off the ONE v3 and run them on the v2? I'll probably just try it - it's a menu option on the v2!?! But says there's no info available.

FIFTH: This Newest Map Garantee . what does it REALLY apply to?? Certainly not my tomtom.

I'm very excited about the potential uses of this, my new favorite toy, but before I break it experimenting I figure why not ask the experts. One of the problems with searching topics and posts is that a lot of items that don't pertain to the ONE v2 show up and aren't immediately apparent.

Unfortunately, from what I've read, TomTom has now made maps very device specific. If your TomTom didn't come with the NA map (which is the one I would recommend, btw) you most likely won't be able to install it even if the website allows you to purchase it. I've read horror stories where people bought the NA maps (when their device came with the USA_and_Canada maps), downloaded them, and then when they went to install it, the software claimed that it was not compatible with their device.

I would call TomTom before buying ANY maps to see if their upgrade would work.

What bothers me most about this is that the entire reason the SD slot exists in the first place was to be able to use other maps, so I'm still finding it hard to believe that TomTom doesn't allow you to purchase a different map to install to your 4GB SD (not SDHC, btw) card.

Maps are device specific - the *.dct file knows your Mother's device ID...this won't work.

Yes to both questions

Since it appears you have the V7 operating system (that includes MAP SHARE) this answer is yes. Simply copy the entire /helpme folder and its contents into a /helpme folder you create on your V2

FIFTH: This Newest Map Garantee . what does it REALLY apply to?? Certainly not my tomtom.

For a period of one month (which seems to be the general consensus on this duration) you can get updates to the map that is installed on your TomTom. If TomTom has a later version of the map than your device when you buy it...you can update it for a period of 30 days once you click on the Use Latest Map Guarantee option. After the 30 days, it will always say you have the latest map.

So, I read this thread and now know that I can't run North America on my ONE V2.

I'm finally getting a hang of the history on the boards - figuring out which discussions are the latest. But now the question is this...
If I buy the North East Regional Map, does it include Map Share? How about an updated US & Canada? Also, how about this supposed "Newest Map Guarantee" which appears to be a bait and switch marketing tactic? Does buying a new map give you the guarantee?

Left to my own devices I will find these answers. I'd just like to avoid the customer support nightmares other people have reported. And having a second hand unit, even though purchased legitimately, I'm worried that Tomtom will ultimately take the "RIAA approach to media and info rights" - that you can never resell anything or buy anything used or use a legit purchased media on a SECOND device or in the presence of others or enjoy it too much; doing so is criminal - and they'll tell me I have to buy a new Tomtom to go with my recently purchased maps... or I can't use my tomtom while driving on new roads or some such outrageous BS their lega ldepartment feeds them.

Thanks for the lowdown on the NA map issue and the device specific situation. I had found the thread that had dropped that bomb. It sounds like Tomtom is undergoing a switch to the Dark Side of the DRM and media usage rights war - putting the locks on all the open doors people had been enjoying. That's too bad. I'm thinking that my best bet would be to start off with a new North East Region map for my usual activity and then get an updated US and Canada later, if I feel compelled.

And thanks for explaining the Newest Map Guarantee. I doubt a new one would slide out within 30 days

I'm also frustrated at the whole device specific map lockdown. I can't stand it when the customers so inclined to do so find the hidden potential in a product and then a company removes it simply to fleece the flock.

MapShare is an operating system feature, not a map feature. This was implemented with V7 of the O/S. Since you have V7, you'll have that feature available for all maps you purchase.

Also, how about this supposed "Newest Map Guarantee" which appears to be a bait and switch marketing tactic? Does buying a new map give you the guarantee?

Another good question for TomTom. I believe they only have this guarantee for maps that actually come on the device. If you purchase a map, by default you are getting the latest map.
