life time map updates on second hand device

Hi,

My dad has tomtom go 50 and he is willing to pass this to me. He doesn't know if he ever activated the life time update on this device. He hasn't got the proof of purchase. He also doesn't remember his tomtom account details.

I have heard that life time update are only available to those devices which are bought from approved sellers like Halford and etc. Can anyone please advise if its true.

Also, what if he has activated the updates (he doesn't know his account details) , can i just create a new account on my name and start downloading life time updates?

What your dad should have done is simply change the details of his TT account to to your details and then the device would be registered to you and you would be entitled to all the services available.
