Hi,
I have TT One XL-S and I'm happy with it. My maps are almost over 2 years old and it's time to do update. But, if I have to pay $75 for US & Canada update, isn't "smarter" actually to buy new TomTom GPS for $150 (as an example Amazon.com: TomTom XXL 540S 5-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator: Electronics or Amazon.com: TomTom GO 730 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished): Electronics). Actually that way I'm getting new TomTom for $75, right?

Or there is something I don't know or don't understand?

Thanks for any thoughts,
Afan

IMO - The time to update your maps is when they offer a discount. I updated my 2 year old Tom Tom ONE in December as they had a great deal going on. I also do not foresee going to Canada anytime soon so I just updated to the stand alone USA map, saving even more money.

NOW, since I have updated the map, everytime I connect the ONE to the PC, I am getting Mapshare updates, which I never got before.

Well, right now TomTom is having a map sale so the USA_Canada newest map for your model is $48 US.

That said, one of the models mentioned (the 730 refurb) is NOT entitled to the latest map guarantee though some people do get it for their refurbs on a case by case basis.

The other you mentioned is indeed a newer model with anice large 5" screen. If it is new from amazon, you are entitled the the LMG for it.

Guess it is like anything, do we pay to keep an older model operational or do we junk it for a newer one?

The 'disposable society', it seems..........

Not planning to go to Canada any time soon??? - DHN - stand-up for Canada!

Actually - if you went there in the next few months. you might not find too many people there - they are all in Florida if not already in Vancouver.

Sorry DHN - could not help myself this morning

Oh, I saw that, Gary......:)

You're correct about many going to Vancouver next month for the Olympics............too bad the mountain for the skiing is all mud, as I understand it............think they are praying for colder weather and snow BIG TIME!

afan,

I faced the same decision, and I decided to go with a new TomTom. I'm very glad I did! I had a One 130s with 1.5 year old maps. I got a Go 630 for $170 from Dell on Black Friday, and then sold my 130s on e-bay for $80. So for $90 I got a huge improvement in features and performance (IQroutes alone was worth the money!!), plus the latest maps, and warranty.

$48? I got this morning email from TomTom with link "Save up to 40% on New Maps!"
When I opened the page and selected the GPS have and selected USA & Canada I got the price GBP 39.95 (British pounds) = $65.10

@face
I can't find US only map to buy?

What's the trick with Mapshare?

What I wonder is, can you store the maps, locally, on your computer, in the case you have a problem with the GPS, or do the maps load directly on to your GPS itself?

I would think that paying $75 for maps after 2 years wouldn't make sense when the new units aren't that expensive, except for the premium units. Sure, if you have a $400 unit, it might make sense to update. A $150 - doubtful.

Unless, as the other user states, you can get a discount. ;)

I agree that when you can get some models for $100 or so new, not much motivation to pay for updated maps.

Existing maps can (and should) be backed up on your computer. Upgraded maps are always installed (in compressed form) on the computer first and then installed on the unit.
