External speaker issues

I just bought a 510. I like it better than my Nuvi 350 I had ( before someone "borrowed" it)
Anyways, I drive an 18 and it gets a bit lound in the cab sometimes and I could NOT hear nor use my phone functions because of this. So being the truck driver I am, I bought an external 5 watt speaker to mount over my head.
Only problem is: The INTERNAL speaker is louder and more clear.
Is there a specific speaker to use or is the jack on the mount bad?

Im sure the mount is not bad.
I have 2 mounts and had to problem hearing my navigation through my car's speakers. It was loud and clear.

Does the speakers you use have a seperate volume?
I also know there is a user in the creative computer speakers for the x10 and it worked well for them.

Err - I was under the impression that the output from the tomtom mount was line out. You'd need some form of amp between that and the speaker to drive any serious amount of volume - someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though!
