Charging battery while Tom Tom Start 50 is connected to the pc

Do you need to have the TT show up in My Computer as another drive, i.e. J drive? In other words, will just having the TT attached to the USB cable which is occupying one of the USB ports do the trick and charge the battery?

Yes it should. Device does not have to be on to be charged.

In fact, the device will charge far more quickly on a PC connection if it is NOT on. Compared to the car charger, your PC provides only 1/2 to 1/3 of the current, and if your Start is running, it uses much of what the PC can supply over its USB connection, leaving not much for charging. So if you want to charge from the PC and not have to wait for a long time, turning it off is advised.
