Co Pilot have just released an update for their iPhone Navigator which enables users to go to Settings and toggle off Background Navigation, to preserve battery life when not driving.
Tom Tom take note. It's time to catch up with the facilities offered on the cheapest iPhone sat nav app (which already has route optimisation).
