Okay, I gave it a try:
I used the well-known Tango icon set, and tried for a cleaner skin than the ones I had been seeing, complete with labels and a better color scheme.

So far, I've only done the widescreen night version, but I plan on porting the theme over to the other resolutions and daytimes.
I worked on it for enough hours today, and here's what I still don't like about it. You guys can of course feel free to edit and contribute your ideas:
- The satellite box is a bit close to the duration area.
- The Duration word has the default red "dur." on top of it.
- The max speed arrow's alignment needs to be fixed.
- Maybe the speed box needs to be bigger? I didn't test it out with 3-digit speeds yet.
- Other general text alignment issues - it's HARD aligning to phantom numbers!
I also cleaned up a bunch of the other bitmaps that come with the program:
Speed Limit Warning to go with the above skin:

And in the /skin directory, for the setup menus:

I also hated the default Dixon font that comes with the program - it's way too blocky for a clean look in my opinion. The program uses Arial for most things, and Dixon for the big numbers... I changed everything to Arial. If you want to do the same, all you have to do is go into the /skin/BigFont.txt file, and change "Dixon 24" to "Arial 24".
All the above works fine with the latest version of TripMaster (1.7b).
I'm using layered Fireworks PNG files, so if anybody wants to help out, just tell me, and I'll send you the source files.
Oh, and hi to the forum - I'm Joseph.
Any questions, let me know!
