- TomTom GO Camper
I note with interest the continued advertising campaign trying to encourage the purchase of units.
I have always been a staunch supporter of TomTom since I purchased my first one probably nearly 30 years ago.
Until my recent purchase of the TomTomGO Camper Max, I have been pleased with the units, they were easy to use and reliable about locating the desired location.
Sadly, that changed with my purchase of the TomTom Camper unit which has proved to be very disappointing for the following reasons.
1. It has proved to be unreliable about navigating to the required position - trying to locate camp sites, only to be taken to building sites about 7 km from the chosen site - often on roads that are unsuitable for cars, let alone a camping car.
2. Programming with GPS coordinates has proved to be impossible; previous units accepted inputs in multiple formats making it easy to use the GOS function. But the Camper ONLY accepts one style of input and that has proved impossible to input as there are spaces required where there should be none, or vice versa. This rigidity of input makes the unit unacceptable.
3. On approaching roundabouts, it gives no clue what exit is required until actually on the roundabout. This is dangerous as camping cars need to be in the correct lane even more so than cars, solely due to their size. This lack of advanced information means I cannot trust the unit to navigate safely. This information eg “take the second exit” allows the driver to use the correct lane - as required by driving laws throughout the world. Not giving that information makes the unit dangerous.
4. The route chosen for the designated vehicle is often wrong - the width and size seems to be ignored, even when it is correctly programmed and the correct vehicle option chosen. I have been faced with the necessity to do about turns to avoid low bridges (signposted in advance) or very narrow roads - narrowed due to the road structure not obstructions.
4. The unit is unreliable as regards connection to the 12v supply and has suddenly cut off in the midst of a manœuvre - there is NO ADVANCE WARNING that eg the unit is down to 10% power as my phone and tablet does.
5. Sadly I now do not consider the unit to be of an acceptable standard for use - it is unreliable, inaccurate and dangerous. Sadly, I very much doubt that you will accept these comments, I have kept the unit up to date, in itself, not an easy task as it wants to download eg maps for Africa when I am in Europe.
6. I always used to be a strong advocate for Tom Tom, but that is no longer accurate, I am very unlikely to use TomTom now as my prime navigation system, it is an expensive and dangerous article that often falls off the windscreen or shuts itself down or simply fails to find the desired destination.
Why has it all gone so wrong for TomTom ?
With great regret, a very unhappy customer of many years loyalty,
