Go Navigation on Android very slow to start

Both on my previous phone (Pixel 6a) and my current phone (Pixel 9), the Go Navigation app takes anywhere from 50 seconds to a minute to start. For a modern app on a modern phone, that's incredibly slow.
Am I the only one? Is there a setting I can use to speed this up?

You are not the only one. It also applies to ANdroid smartphone. Take a look at yours and let me know if your is same on Apple. I have noticed that ONLY WHEN MY Mobile COnnection is poor with only 1 bar, my TomTom GO will get stuck at LOADING APP... for 1-2 minutes. EVEN with all apps downloaded onto the smartphone. If I have 5 bars mobile connexion, my app loads after about 5 secs of Loading Apps msg. Is yours same (make sure your map is downloaded to smartphone as well.) let me know. Try to find a poor mobile reception with 1 bar and try opening app. see if you get Loading app....

I have an Android phone (as I said: a Pixel 9). When I launch the app with strong WiFi it's also 50 seconds, so data speed doesn't seem to be the reason.

THe only solution for you is to update Google Play System, (not the same as Play Store), PlaySTore Apps, System software, then CLEAR CACHE and DATA of TOmtom, then UNinstall tom tom. REBOOT, and after reboot, Reinstall TT. Then should solve it. Recently many things got updated and your app got corrupted. These steps will fix it. Make sure LOCATION is also turned to ALWAYS and PRECISE after Tom reinstalled in PERMISSIONS, Let me know after all steps done.

Try my video as I made one to help you, and this should solve it.
Watch this video on the PC (not smartphone) and action steps on the smartphone.

Thanks, I'll give it a try
Ed, please make sure you download ENTIRE COUNTRY (not just local peiece) of your location AND Entire Country of your destination (like i explain in video)
If that does not work, u need to clear cache, clear data, uninstall App, reboot, then reinstall app and ALL maps again. that should fix it. Multiple updates to app recently likely corrupted the app coding, so it has a hard time loading for you. Let me know. ALso, TomTom support is tracking the issue of not loading and they will come with a fix-may take days-weeks-months-noone knows yet. try my advise above and see if works.

Well, I tried: stopped app, cleared cache and data, uninstalled app, rebooted, reinstalled and downloaded all maps (complete countries). Unfortunately that doesn't make a difference, still 50 seconds startup time.

I guess I just have to remember to start the app before I leave the house. Thanks anyway!

Ed, I opened a ticket with the Developers (I am a beta tester and have direct access to developers)-they got this and they are aware of this PLUS they are also aware of the Loading Maps..... getting stuck forever. They are working on the fix right now as we speak. I will return when they update me.

Thank you for updating your incident .

Thank you very much for sharing the detailed video and explanation. I really appreciate the time and effort you took to record and describe the issue so clearly.
I’ve shared the full video with our development team and asked them to review it in its entirety, as you mentioned, so they can fully understand the connection you’ve highlighted.

From our initial review, it appears that the app may occasionally fail to launch when the mobile network is extremely weak. In such cases, Android reports that a data connection is available, but the app cannot properly connect to our servers, which causes it to freeze on the loading screen.

As a temporary workaround, please try this:
  1. Turn on Flight Mode (or disable mobile data) before opening the app.
  2. Once the app launches, you can turn Flight Mode off again if you’d like to use live services like Traffic or Search.
This ensures the app starts in offline mode using your downloaded maps.

Our development team is aware of this behavior and is looking into improving how the app handles poor network conditions in a future update.

This workaround doesn't work for almost year...

I think this company is very very short staffed of Developers so I'm working with a really nice developer and hopefully he'll be able to fix this for us. Give him a few days.

Thanks, that does work, but with all the extra actions, it's not a whole lot faster. Flight mode nowadays keeps WiFi on, so you have to disable en re-enable that too. Now it's 40 seconds, only 10 seconds faster.

Oh I gave them almost a year - and still I'm using TomTomGo because for me is the best nav soft - when works ;)

I agree with that, but it's annoying having to wait for almost a minute for it to start. I haven't seen other apps taking so long for years

I agree it's the BEST APP NAV out there. Whats happening is this: TomTom explained to me that when you execute the app on smartphone, the App is "talking" to ANdroid System inside ur smartphone to see if Internet is available on smartphone, and if ANdroid says "YES!" then app is trying to Establish Server connection to TomTom's server to talk to the server and the BUG is that app gets stuck at that "talking to server". I think eventually this bug will be fixed, but I hear this has been going on since december last yr, so I hope our feedback does NOT fall on dead ears at ToMTOm. Did you all sent a support ticket to tomtom? If not, please send support tocket to (e-mail address removed)

I have no SD card in it. There is a micro SD slot however I have no card there as it comes with 128GB plus 6GB ram

Currently internal storage used is 74.35GB or 58% so lots still available

In terms of memory I am using 3.5GB so 2.5GB available.

Ran tablet diagnostics and all normal

I've done some test on the latest version of application (to be sure that nothing has changed ;) ). So the procedure was like that:
1. Application not used for couple of hours, everything in application on (account, MyDrive sync., searching in internet...), Airplane mode on (no internet) - application doesn't start (infinite starting screen)
2. No changes in application, Airplane off (internet by wifi) - normal start of application
3. I've logged out from TomTom account, turn off MyDrive sync and searching, ad exited application (also from memory)
4. Airplane mode on (no internet) - application starts normally (even slightly faster)
5. Airplane mode off (internet by wifi), I've logged into the TomTom account, turned on MyDrive sync etc. and exited application (also from memory)
6. Air plane mode on (no internet) - application starts normally, I've exited application and left phone for night not changing anything in application but I've turn off Airplane mode
7. This morning: Air plane mode on (no internet) - application doesn't start (infinite starting screen).
8. Air plane mode off (internet by wifi) - normal start

I don't have GSM reception in my home (yes, there are such places in Europe so as You can see working off-line navigation has a great sense)

So situation is the same as it was at the beginning of the year. For some time after successful start, application can be started even off-line but just for some time and no one knows how long (my numerous test showed that it can be couple of minutes or hours...)

My situation is the same. After I delete everything and reinstall app, it works for a few hours when I'm off line. Then for some unknown reason stops starting.

But if I connect to WiFi, it works perfectly

And to confirm I have no SIM card in my tablet so it can't be because of weak connection

Trin, I am happy to help. I am not sure what else to recommend. I hope your input to TT Support does not fall on dead ears and they listen to us and do some corrective actions to solve this app not working.

* It used to be the best app, but it's no longer the case.

Between the roads and roundabouts created a few months ago, and the speed cameras that aren't updated.

I actually have speed cameras toggled OFF on my app because i dont speed that much. I just follow traffic. It distructs me with those speed camers on app. I like minimum distrx.

Whenever you start the TomTom GO app it tries to access at least 2 domains through internet. Whenever it can't reach those domains (while connected to internet) you'll end up with the endless circle spinning.

At home I'm running an adblock on my internet router and I see TomTom GO wants to access the following domains:

device-api.asnapieu.com
remote-data.asnapieu.com

These requests were blocked by my adblocker and TomTom would not load (spinning circle). I had to put these 2 domains on the whitelist for the TomTom GO app to start.

Whenever you have succeeded to start the app it will probably work for the next few hours. If you try to start the app later on it will try to reach those domains again and when not possible (in case of no internetconnection), it fails to start the app.

h those domains again and when not possible (in case of no internetconnection), it fails to start the app.
Exactly! So there are 2 things: The first thing was your AdBlock ionside ROuter blocking it. The second issue: Even when you do NOT have any AdBlocks on router, when you have poor INTERNET connection, App Can NOT reach the server, and gets STUCK with Loading Maps. So what I was told by TomTom Support as a TEMPORARY MEASURE UNTIL THE FIX COMES OUT: you can put Smartphone into AIRPLANE MODE for a second, OPEN TOMTOM WHILE IN AIRPLANE MODE (make sure your maps downloaded as TT will feed off of downloaded maps instead of server's maps), then Turn airplane mode OFF (after TT executed on smartphone) and u will be good to go.
