TomTom Model(s)
Via 1535 TM
I have had a TT GO630 for a few years that uses the TT home application. When I log in and plugged in the TT Go630 the screen changes and shows a number of horizontal download bars downloading updates.
About a month ago I purchased a TT Via 1535TM. It operates on the My TomTom application and when I I log on it says the following:

Connect your device!

  1. <LI added="null">Connect your device to your computer using the USB cable supplied with your device.
  2. When connected, turn the device on. MyTomTom will automatically recognize your device and find the latest update for you.
My question is: Is there supposed to be the same horizontal bar downloads showing that there are updates?
Since I bought it, My TomTom recognizes my Via 1535TM but I always get the same notice:

Latest map guarantee. You already have the latest map.
Your navigation is up to date. There are no updates waiting for installation.

With the TT Go630 I had updates every other day and the download bars showed it. With the TT Via 1535TM I always get the same above message.

Am I doing something wrong or are there actually NO updates? Also is there a particular way to disconnect the TT Via1530TM from the computer when finished? Any input is appreciated. Thanks

When you connect the 1535 to MyTomTom and log in, there should be a link called 'Get new items' on the web page. When you click on that, if it shows nothing, then it appears you are up to date.

Mapshares are not working as yet so you won't be getting them. A new map (890) will be out within a week or so.

Your unit should show 'it's safe to disconnect...' when it is.

RE TT Via 1535TM update question

Thanks for the answer. I have used the link "Get New Items" and it shows nothing. Therefore as you suggest I am up to date.
As far as the proper disconnect procedure, the unit does not show any indication that it is safe to disconnect. I have sat for a few minutes after the My TomTom says I am up to date but with the unit connected and the My TomTom screen on I get no notice to disconnect.

As with Home, there are two steps when items are being moved to your 1535. One is between the remote server and your PC, and one is between your PC and your unit. If neither the web page nor your unit indicate that the unit must remain connected, you should be safe to disconnect at your leisure. If you have actually moved data to your unit, it will let you know when it's done and when it's safe to disconnect.

There is no requirement (nor even the possibility) to do a "USB disconnect" even though the device connects through a USB port because it's converting the USB connection to a network style connection through a driver. With Home, you had to either use Home or the USB systray icon to properly disconnect -- but not now.

As far as the proper disconnect procedure, the unit does not show any indication that it is safe to disconnect.

You WILL get that indication when MyTomTom has actually installed an update.
While the update is happening the TT screen will say "Do not disconnect!" (or words to that effect) and so will the MyTomTom display on the PC screen.

But if an update isn't going on, then it's supposedly safe to disconnect at any time.

There is an advantage to the mytomtom system over the tomtom home syste - you can disconnect without worrying about corrupting any part of the op sys and having to reload it. It just stops downloading. If you connect later, download automatically resumes where it left off.

While it's downloading from the server maybe, but I'd say not while it is installing to the TomTom itself.
Otherwise, why would they have that "Do not disconnect!" message on screen?
