Hi mate ..thank you for quick response.. I tried all of them before I joined here and as you've advised, but not successful.
I can see the map in the SD card .but when I tried to update the map, it wont show or even give me an option to remove the old map with tomtom home software etc ..you can see carefully the photo I've upload, I won't spend £40 on new map on this old device ..
but just to update this old device and map etc ..

What took place just before all of this occurred? Have you ever gone to sources other than TomTom for a map?
And to be clear, this device has both internal memory and SD card? Some XL models had no internal memory. Tell you what, let us know the first two characters of its serial number. That will sort out the memory question.

You evidently have the map files, but not the *.dct that goes with them to enable them for your specific device. Check the folder Western_Europe_1GB for a file ending with *.dct. It should be 132 bytes in size. It is the file that keys the map you have to your device serial number.

Do you have any sort of backup of your device or by ANY chance have you ever updated the full map and have the PC that did that bit of work? If either is true, we can probably put you back to rights.

Also, I don't think there's any amount you can spend to get a new SD card or map download for your device from TomTom. That map has been out of production for a while now -- they quit making new maps for the small memory devices.

Hi @canderson. Thank you for response ..

I have checked the folder but it does not have that the file. I do have backup, I did this yesterday. To be honest with you, is not my TomTom, is for a friend of mine. Also the SD card is internal and I cannot add another SD card.

Do you think that there is a possibility we can update it how it is or chuck it in the bin?

Please let me know your thoughts.

Before you chuck it, let's see if we can straighten out both me and the device. And there remain some key questions in my original post, most particularly the source of the map currently resident on the device.

I need the first two characters of the serial number to understand all of this commentary about 'SD card'.

Second, that *.dct file is going to be critical. It's why the device is reporting that the map has to be 'activated'. Check your backup for that file.
Third, and again, what was being done just before / when all of this started? I note very recent file/folder dates in your screen shots. Was the backup done, the device manipulated in some way (please advise what was done) and then screen shots I see above taken after the fact?

You cannot update the maps -- unit has too little memory and is hence no longer supported with new maps anyway -- but if you have a backup of it in its working state, we should at least be able to get you back to that point again.
