TOM TOM XL not found by connect software / Windows 10 drivers?

Hi All,

I have a TomTom XL sat nav and am trying unsuccessfully to update my maps.
Tried so far:
1. Installed Tom TOM mydrive connect software from website 4.1.6.3229
2. Attached device and clicked Yes to connect to my computer, now the device itself has a blue screen with a pic of the Tom Tom
3. The device shows up as a HDD but nor a network adaptor in Device manager
4. When starting the software, it doesnt recognise the device, yet as said earlier windows seems to , albeit as a HDD
5. Uninstalled device, tried updating the drivers, plus reboot tried, still appears as Tom Tom one on hard drives
6. Tried different USB ports. no change.
Is there just a driver I can download and manually install the Tom Tom correctly, or am I just missing something obvious here..

Also tried copying the home images as per https://uk.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/7375/related/1

That applies the the newer, so called NAV3/4 device.
You must connect with HOME2 .
