how do you save a moditifed route to turn into the default route option?

how do you save a moditifed route to turn into the default route option?

Save as an itinerary.

this does not seem to store the modified route. I keep going in circles...
load destination address>
alternate route via avoid part of route>
new route is good. Go to intinerary planning> options>
Save>done>navigate now

goes back to original route that is not what I want to use...

thoughts or suggestions as to what I am doing wrong?

Maybe if you add a few waypoints along the route you prefer and then save that route.
