Hey Guys,

Have a question re the XL340S. In the market for a GPS and feel comfortable with the Tomtom and think the XL340S is in the price range and has the necessary features I require.

Have only one concern which I haven't been able to find the answer for. I reside in Australia and travel to the US on a weekly basis for my work. I know the 340 comes preloaded with maps of the US, Canada and Mexico but has limited internal / non expansion memory.

My question/s therefore are:

1. Would anyone happen to know with the preloaded maps, would an additional map for Australia "fit"on the remaining available memory?

2. Is it possible / easy to simply "add and remove" maps? For example if Im in the US one week and then back in Australia the next and have no intention of travelling to Mexico or canada are you able to remove these maps for your tomtom and store them on your PC (to save space) and then simply "re add" them if I ever subsequently need to travel to Mexico / Canada?

Cheers guys

Stuart

Welcome to TTF.

You can't 'split' the maps as such, meaning you can't delete just Mexico and Canada and leave the States there but what you can do is this:

1. Make a complete backup of your unit's contents using Explorer, not Home.
2. Move the entire USA_Canada_Mexico map folder to your computer.
3. Buy, download and install the Oz map on your unit.

When it comes time to go to the States, move the Oz map folder to your computer. Copy back the U_C_M map.

etc.......

I don't think you'd have space for both US and Australia maps on the unit at the same time, considering TT had to (again) re-release a U_C_M map further 'squished' to fit the internal storage of the 340. (They screwed up with the 830 map 3 months ago, too.

Hey DHN,

Thanks for the reply mate. For the record is the process you speak of relatively simple? As I said I would likely be doing this on a weekly basis and have "ok" (but not great) PC skills. Plus to be honest if its complex / time consuming Im sure I likely couldn't be a$$ screwing around to much each week. 5 minutes here and there - all good......Longer more complex I wouldnt be so keen on.

Conversely if it is a longish / complex process - is there another device you would recommend? As I said I dont really need to many features beyond "Point A to Point B" with some speech instructions and I like the advanced lane thing.

LOL.

Thanks DHN and yeah probably a good call mate.

10 minutes sounds pretty reasonable in the big scheme of things.........

Cheers again!

I wouldn't recommend the map moving.

The 340 uses USB 1.1 and has really slow data-transfer firmware. People are posting that map moves take 5+ hours.

I'd recommend buying a GO model (even something as old as a 520). They have expandable memory and you'll get both maps to fit at once. Also, they have USB2 so map transfers take 10 minutes.
