please help...now what to do next

hi all

i spoiled myself today bought an XXL 540 S
was going to buy Xl 340 S @ $179.99
by listening to dhn in this forum this morning
but could not resisted my bad habit and ended up paying $299.99
(on sale instead of $349.99)
sorry dhn for not listening to you my apology
have not open the package yet
prefer to get some valuable suggestion and or advices from the experts in this forum
please guide me what i suppose to do now
like backing up the map and etc
this is my very first gps
and if all possible please guide me in step by step how to get it done

Before doing anything else, make an Explorer, not Home, backup of your unit's contents. If not sure how, check out the information in this link.

Understand that the model you bought is just usb 1.1 compliant, meaning the backup will be slow (maybe an hour) but do it.

Then, log into TomTom, portable GPS car navigation systems and create an account for yourself to register the unit. Requires an email address and a password.

Also at Tomtom.com in this link you'll be able to download and install the latest version of Home. It may be more current than the version on the cd that came with your unit.

Then, with the unit charged, Home installed and running, connect the unit to the computer so that Home recognizes it and see if you can get an updated application for the unit over that which came with the unit. If so, download and install. But do NOT try for the Latest Map Guarantee now! A new version (840) is due within the next week or so and you want to use the LMG for that version, not 835 which may be offered now. For sure, within the 30 days you are allowed, 840 will be available. Wait for it.

Next, charge your unit for a couple of hours connected by the usb cable to your computer.

Then, go and play with the unit. Try things out. Use it for navigation. See what it can and cannot do.

Check here every day or so over the next week or 10 days and I'm sure you'll see when the map is out. When it is, use the LMG in home to download and install it.

Then make another Explorer backup to a different folder.

Finally, never, ever, disconnect the unit improperly from the computer! When you have home running, you'll see a small disconnect (blue) icon in the bottom right of Home's screen to use for disconnecting.

There, that should get you started........
