PC Routing without online connection

Is there a way to route on PC and transfer it to a Tomtom device without being connected online?
I figured out that the Go models will do this by plugging in the device and using some kind of emulator program to control the device to route.
How well does this work and do other non Go models support this (especially the maps for life models like XXL540M)?
I have used Delorme Street Atlas for years with a PDA but would like to make a dedicated GPS do what I have been doing with the PDA and have built in routing also. (the PDA won't route)
Of course the reason for this is that online connections aren't available always, especially in National Parks.
