if you have set the navigator to not a motorway it would be nice if it could make the route even though the only option was over a smaller distance with the motorway, and walk away from the motorway at the first option so as not to lay the route of several parts
Green line road
Yellow line highway

A suggestion like your should be addressed to TomTom although it may be difficult for them to realise when a user actually wants to take a normally undesirable route for just one section of the road..
