Older XL needs update

Two years ago I bought two Tomtom XL One GPS units.
I kept one and gave the other to my adult daughter.
I registered mine and updated via tomtom Home regularly. My daughter didn't.
Recently I set up Home on her laptop and tried to update her map for the first time.
It wouldn't allow it and even some of the features on Home were faded out and inaccessible to it.
Does this mean the unit is a virtual doorstop now that its map can never be updated?

Did you remember to associate her unit with a different account at TT? (email address/pw)?
