New TomTom One - advice sought

Folks:

Just purchased a new TomTom One (v3/v4) i.e. 1Gb Internal.
Want to use it in the US, Australia, and Western Europe.

I _think_ that what I need to do is this:

a) back up the existing US/Canada maps
b) get some 2GB SD cards (there seem to be some suggestions
that the 4GB cards are problematic and sometimes slower)
c) buy new maps for Europe and Australia.
d) pay for new North American maps (as opposed to the pre-
installed US and Canada maps).
e) install the maps for the region I'm in at the time in the
internal memory; keeping copies on SD cards or elsewhere.
Reason? Speed and avoiding card-reading errors.

Did I miss something? Am I on the right track?

Any advice gratefully received.

Andrew.

a) Yes, always a good idea. I also burn a copy on to a DVD for additional security.

b) A normal 2 gb Sandisk card works well for me.

c) Be prepared for a shock when you see what they are charging for the Australia map! Be sure to purchase the 'Western & Central Europe' map as opposed to the plain 'Western Europe' map. Users in Europe are saying that the latter is extremely stripped down so that it will fit on a 1 gb card.

d) Your present NA maps are probably sufficiently up to date. I'd wait at least another year to update.

e) The Western & Central Europe maps are over 1 gb, so they won't fit in internal memory. You should have a 2 gb card with the map and the operating files.

The Australia map is around 84 mb, so it should fit on the card too. Just use the 'Switch maps' command to change between them.

Note that when you insert the sd card, you bypass entirely the internal memory. So just leave the US maps where they are.

Thanks for all the above. Couple of quick clarifications:

> d) Your present NA maps are probably sufficiently up to date.

I was more worried about the North America vs USA and Canada issue,
which I take it is similar to the Western & Central Europe versus Western
Europe issue that you highlighted. I thought (correct me if I'm wrong)
that the maps that come pre-installed are stripped-down in comparison
with the North America maps.

What are included in "and the operating files"?

Thanks again,

Andrew.

P.S. I know the Australian maps are ridiculously expensive: it's those
southern hemisphere bits & bytes - they're a lot more expensive!! ;-)

Most comments on the differences between the NA & USA/Canada maps seem to be concerning the number of POIs provided. Also, details such as bodies of water seem to have been stripped out of the USA/Canada map to reduce it's size a bit. It don't recall people mentioning differences in the actual map detail.

The operating system files are basically everything that is on the internal memory MINUS the map folder.
