Zooming up on this image, it's still too blurry to be sure we know what we're reading here.
Can you please copy/paste something original?

Thank you for your very prompt response.
Sir/Madam

Please can you help?
After the latest map update Our Tom Tom Go 5100 has lost its maps according to the message on its screen. We have it put the maps onto an SD card so, I have plugged the SD card into the computer. The SD card is almost full, there are eight files on it. Tom Tom 000, Tom Tom 001, etc. Am I correct in thinking these are the downloaded map files? Do I only need the most recent one?

Although our Tom Tom Go 5100 is saying it has no maps. Tom Tom My Drive says that it is fully up to date. Tom Tom My Drive is still saying that even though I have changed the SD card for an empty one. So I am in the process of doing a factory reset. After the white text screen and the black screen I am now at the screen picturing a Tom Tom and a computer screen however my drive continuously tells me I have no internet connection, and that it will reconnect once I have one. Well I do have a very good internet connection. I have been to several sites including the Tom Tom My Drive web site. How do I resolve this issue. Before downloading Tom Tom's lasts map of Europe I had to update Tom Tom My Drive Connect. When My Drive Connect would not connect to the internet, I removed it from my computer and downloaded it again. It the connected to the internet. I had put an empty Micro SD card into my TomTom Go 5100 but Tom Tom My Drive Connect still said that my device was up to date. (I had also deleted the map update from my downloads folder on my computer).

After Doing the factory reset steps, there are now three folders on the formally blank Micro SD card.

And these are the Files that are on the Micro SD card that was in the Tom Tom at the time when I did a map update and got the error message: No maps Available Reinstall a map you already own or go to the Tom Tom shop to buy a map. In fact we have been frightend by this message a number of times before but it has always been alright in the end. But not this time.

1653558976805.png

I note that most recent file is smaller?

Tom Tom has locked all three of my 16 Gb Micro SD cards so I am unable to reformat any of them. I have attempted to unlock a card from the command prompt with DiskPart it said, that it had worked but I cannot write to the card or reformat it.
I hope you can help

Robert

First, let's look at your card issue.
TomTom doesn't and can't 'lock' your cards.
What you are seeing on your card are several (8) Unix ext2 partitions, stored in a FAT32 partition. Messy, but normal.
If you run a "full" format on your cards from your PC, they should look normal again.
That said, those 8 TOMTOM.00x file ARE normal. They contain your map data. They are ALL needed. Multiple partitions are created not because any one is newer than another, but because of the partition size limitation of ext2 on your TomTom card. Your map data is spread across all 8 partitions.

I'd start over with fully formatted cards. Your 5100 will then offer to 'format' your cards again. Allow it to do so. It will create partitions again that look like you have already seen.

Once at least one of the cards are ready, we'll get to the MyDrive issue next.

Thank you so much your explanation makes it all much clearer. All the of my cards are indeed locked, I cannot unlock any of them, I have tried several ways.
I have ordered a new card which I'm sure will come formatted to fat 32. Because our Tom Tom thinks it has no map, I will not be able to access the menue in order to format the card using the Tom Tom Go.
I'll have to wait for the new card to arrive before I can continue. Thank you so much for your help so far.

What sort of PC are you using to try to format these cards, and what method are you using in the attempt? TomTom doesn't lock cards placed into and formatted on 5xx/6xx/5xxx/6xxx series devices. No digital write protection is used. Heaven knows I swap them around here often enough. The cards are FAT32 formatted, and the 8 'DOS' files should be able to be seen and deleted. In fact, you showed us the contents of one of your cards. When you say "locked", what exactly do you mean?

Just for grins, assuming you have a Windows based machine, install your uSD card and get to a command line and type DISKPART.
When the "DISKPART>" prompt comes up, type LIST DISK
What does it say about your uSD card? Can you spot it in the list?
Once you know which number it is, type SELECT DISK n (where 'n' is the disk number for the uSD card).
Then type DETAIL DISK and see what it has to say.
When done, type EXIT

As for maps, all we need to do is add a tiny map from MyDrive that will fit in your 5100's internal memory (no uSD required) to get you up and running. It needn't be a whole map set.

Hello again you certainly appear to be dedicated, My PC is a desktop running Windows 10 64bit.
To answer your questions:

The Micro SD cards are read using an adaptor making them like a full size SD card, the switch on both of my adaptors is set towards the contacts ( I have tried it both ways on each card just in case).

I right click and select format, I untick the quick format option and click start, I then get a warning that all data will be erased, I click OK. I then get the message, “ The disk is write protected.

I cannot write or change the data on any of the three Micro SD cards.

I have performed the exercise you suggested with DiskPart Here are the results: Card 1

Second card – the one that was always in the Tom Tom with the maps on it. This card has now changed since I last looked at it 'very strange'.

This card had the maps on where have they gone?

Third card same as the first

I should soon have my new card.

Just as a last resort I put one of the cards that I can see files on into my wife's laptop which runs Windows 10 32bit and it has formatted the card.

Sounds to me like your computer is detecting the lock switch on your uSD > SD card adapter. Does hers have a uSD slot, or were you still using the uSD > SD adapter on her computer?

Anyway - we're over that odd hump, and we can try to move along with the meat of your problem now.

Next, let's be 100% sure that your computer is detecting your 5100.

What I'd like you to do now is to NOT install a uSD card, fire up the MyDrive Connect app on your PC, and see what happens. Do NOT connect your 5100 at this time. Don't worry if MyDrive Connect complains about anything. Don't even bother to log in yet.

  1. Remove any uSD card from your 5100.
  2. It if it running, shut down the MyDrive Connect app on your PC (right click the icon in your systray, lower right, and select "Quit").
  3. Restart the MyDrive Connect app on your PC. Wait until MyDrive Connect appears on your screen and has loaded as much as it will.
  4. Run Device Manager on your PC without your 5100 connected.
  5. Take a look at "Network Adapters" within Device Manager. Note any/all that you see there.
  6. Now, connect your 5100 to your PC via USB.
  7. Look again at "Network Adapters". You should see the added entry "Remote NDIS Compatible Device"

If so, at a minimum, we know your device is connecting properly, and should be recognized by MyDrive Connect.

How we doing so far? Device properly recognized?

OK, back to MyDrive Connect. You said something about it not finding the internet before? When you ran that program in Step 3, what exactly did it have to say for itself? Screen shot, please, if there's anything unusual to report.

When your 5100 says "No Map Available", is there also a button below that saying "Add a Map"?

Hello and thank you for your latest email.

Just so as you know until the map update problem, the Tom Tom and the laptop computer both belonging to my wife, and the two devices only, have been used together prior to this map update failure. My wife's laptop has a full size SD card reader and so requires the adaptor to read the micro SD card.

I have followed your advice and everything seams to be as you expected.

After plugging in the Tom Tom 5100
1653752702372.png

Referring back to My Drive Connect – before we could download the updated map, My Drive Connect required us to update My Drive Connect which we did and then download the map. After updating the device we then got the error message: No maps Available Reinstall a map you already own or go to the Tom Tom shop to buy a map.

During the factory reset process it tried to connect to My Drive Connect. That is when it said, that there is no internet connection and that it would connect when there is. This happened every time so, I uninstalled My Drive Connect and downloaded it again and it connected to the internet OK but only the once. After that it was back to saying that there is no internet connection and that it would connect when there is. Since then though it has been connecting OK. We are not aware of any issues with our internet connection.

When the TomTom screen says No maps Available Reinstall a map you already own or go to the Tom Tom shop to buy a map. There is no button to add a map just one OK button.

You told me that the cards looked normal and that Tom Tom did not lock the cards, and I am not disputing that, however, My Drive Connect did not seam to recognise that there was a card in the Tom Tom Go 5100?

Our new Micro SD card has arrived, it is another San Disk card but 32Gbs not 16. Should we use the new 32Gb card or the now formatted 16Gb card.

Thank you for your ongoing help.

"That is when it said, that there is no internet connection"
I assume you mean the 5100? It has a SIM card, and we really don't care if it gets an internet connection, which I believe is what it's talking about. What we're concerned about is whether MyDrive Connect recognizes your device. What was MyDrive Connect saying during all of this?

"Since then though it has been connecting OK. "
Again, are you saying that MyDrive Connect sees your 5100?
If so, do NOT insert a uSD card into your 5100.
Pick a VERY small map from the collection shown by MyDrive Connect and install that. It will install to internal memory on your device since you have no card installed.
Having done this, reboot your device. It should boot normally since it will now have that one small (and perhaps useless to you, but useful for this!) map installed. If it does, we can insert the uSD card and work from there.

Hello again

I have done as you asked.
I left the SD card out of our device, Tom Tom My Drive Connect recognized our Tom Tom Go 5100 as Tom Tom Go 5000. My Drive Connect showed that our device as up to date? In spite of it having no map.
I downloaded the small map of Venezuela and our Tom Tom Go 5100 updated. I then restarted the Tom Tom and everything appears to be just fine, other than no UK map of course.

Which card do you advise me to use, the 16Gb formatted card or the brand new 32Gb card?

Actually we only ever drive within the UK.

We may still have a problem because Tom Tom My Drive Connect is still saying that our device is up to date.

I will await your further guidance. Looks good so far.

Sounds like you are going to be in good shape.

Honestly, I believe the UK map will fit in the internal space on your 5100. It has 8GB of internal memory to work with, and the UK&ROI map being only 881MB will fit alongside the Venezuela map just fine, then you can delete the Venezuela map. Your timing is good. They just released the 10.90 map, so you'll have a fresh one when you're done.

If later you decide to take the cross-channel ride to Cherbourg or whatever, you can load up the uSD card again and add additional maps.

I suspect there's something funky about the SD card reader on your PC ... not correctly picking up the switch position. When you get your new card, try formatting one of your old uSD cards that wouldn't format before. If it fails, try formatting that new 32GB card you bought. Have a suspicion it may fail as well.

MyDrive Connect will say your device is up to date whenever the firmware and whatever maps you have on it are current. So there's no surprise there. When it had no map, it was merely reporting what it knew, and that was that your firmware was up to date.

Thank you for that.

We would love to install the UK only map, however as far as we can tell My Drive Connect does not offer that option to us. I have read that a moderator can make that option available. I will wait to see if that is the case, rather that downloading the whole of Europe which could make our Tom Tom less efficient.

For interest I will check whether or not my desktop PC. will allow me to write to, or format the brand new San Disk Micro SD card and let you know the result.

tre

Interesting. Surprised you don't see UK/ROI in the list. It's alphabetical. Sure it isn't down there? Yes, you might be able to work with TT on a chat session to make it happen if you can't see it. Downloading all of W. Europe won't slow things down, but you'll probably get a lot of extraneous results on searches for countries that aren't of interest, so I like your idea of sticking with UK/ROI if you can.

Will be interesting to hear the results of your uSD experiment. It sounds as though either the mechanical lock slide on the adapter isn't quite right, or that your reader isn't detecting position correctly.

Hello again

I am still hanging on in the hope of installing the UK only map. Getting direct help from Tom Tom is like pulling teeth. I did eventually found a page with maps of the UK in bits but without any means to download any of them. I have managed to Email Tom Tom so hopefully they will put me right. If not it will be Western Europe again I'll back it up to another card, so if it ever goes pear shaped again, I'll be able to swap cards.

New Micro SD card.JPG

I do not have a deadicated SD card reader for my desktop PC as I do not have the need to read/write to the cards normally. I plug my cameras into a USB port. So I have been using the SD card reader on my Epson printer. I asume that is this card reader that has been at fault. I tried the new Micro SD card, and it yet again said that it was locked.

SD card Slot on printer.JPG

New 32 Gb Micro SD card still says write protected.JPG

I put the card into the card reader on my wife's laptop created a folder and wrote a small file to it.

Hopefuly we will be up and running again soon after Tom Tom reply.

You have been so very helpful and pleasant to converse with. Thank you so much. I will let you know what happens. Thanks again.

Goodbye for now.

Strange
that they offer ME your map, but not you! Check the lower right corner...

Hello again
Yes strange but true.
Tom Tom maps Screen shot.JPG

After Emailing Tom Tom
1654199048990.jpeg

So now we are up and running again, and the map downloaded so quickly.

Thank you so much for your invaluable help.

Whilst I was emailing Tom Tom I informed them of another issue that we had. Our Tom Tom can record a route/track whilst we drive, it can do this whilst it is also giving us directions. Now that feature is potentially invaluable to us because we mostly do not follow the Tom Toms directions all the way. we often don't want any of the choices. The problem is: we cannot give the recorded route a meaningful name. The Edit facility does not work. We also cannot export the route, it does not get uploaded to Tom Tom My Drive on the web. and the Share function does not work either. The first time we tried our Tom Tom asked for a different SD card from the one with the maps on it. We did not have one at that time, and it never asked again. We just get an 'Internal Error' message. So I cannot Rename, Export, or Edit the recorded route. That makes it next to useless.
As I predicted, Tom Tom just sent me a link about creating a route on My Drive. He did offer to help further if it did not solve my problem. He asked for a video of the problem. I'll see what I can do.

Thank you so much for all of your help, we really do appricate it and, we are able to use our Tom Tom again as the need arises.

tre

Do routes save correctly on the device, even with the odd timestamped name? Can you call them up on the device such that you could drive one if you wished? With boatloads of internal memory, especially as you have now, it should be willing to at least record a route and be willing to replay it, even without a uSD card installed.

It's really creating a *.gpx file in 'track' format, dropping a lat/long point every 1 second. I really need to find my GO 600 so that I can play along with you on this one. Will try to do so over the weekend. My 'go to' units right now are a GO 620 and a GO Discover, both of which run somewhat different firmware than your 5100 or my 600 equivalent.

Thank you for your reply

The anwer is yes we can see the route. We can drive the route, which is great, except for we cannot give it a meaningful name, or share ,export or edit when this is required. Also it does not get uploaded to My Drive on the web.

The main thing is that my wife's Tom Tom is now working again. Solving this problem will be the icing on the cake. So no great rush.

Thank you for all your help.
