Map should work but no

I downloaded a map, everything was fine but when I turned on my TomTom with a fresh map, it said it is not compatible. Tomtom is XL Live by the way. In TomTom home, it said this item cannot be used on this device because it needs to be activated first. What do I do? I want to use it because the one I have has just 1 big road.

What is the serial number of your GPS?

Many XL are no longer followed by Tomtom so it is impossible to buy a new map to update.

Have you checked with the serial number if the card is compatible with your XL

If the serial number is on the box, I dont have it. I bought the navigation for cheap from a thrift shop. Is it the R124...

your device's serial number can be found on a label on the GPS below the barcode.

No, found it on some old shady website. I know how to install the map locally. The only problem is the code.
