I would like to use my One XL in my boat for navigating on lakes. Will any third-party lake maps work in my unit?

I think you're outta luck. Only Tom Tom maps work, and they don't have any products for nautical use. I think you'd need a garmin for that.

Yes a Garmin does work for that. Also on some backroads as well. I was in the middle of bone nowhere and had my TT and my parents Garmon. TT was not knowing where it was. Garmn was right on course. Oh well. I like my TT but I like the maps better on the Garmin!

I would be leery, as the TT's are not waterproof. I fish many tournaments with my brother in law, and he uses a Lowrance H2O for the lakes and road travel, but he had to order the Hotspots fishing map to work with it.

It's a slick little unit, and if I recall costs less than my One XLS.
