Hi
I have an updated 5100 GO
I flew from amsterdam to prague
I start my TT in prague - with the latest latest EU maps and all
its been 3 hours since...all connections are okay on the device ...BUT it shows me, I am still in amsterdam
By this time it should have got a satellite check and shown my current location ....but I am still in amsterdam
can anyone bail me out please ?:p

I assume the little chevron that indicates your location in NL is gray, not blue.

Note that in the worst case, it can take as much as 10 minutes in open sky for a GPS receiver to pick up a new almanac from one of the satellites in view when you've made a major shift in location, but not 3 hours.

Hold down the power button until you see the TomTom logo reappear and release the button to perform a hard boot and then give it 10 minutes.

-Yes, grey it is

-have done this, its nore than 30 min now, but no joy-I am way again in amsterdam. in fact after 30 min TT lets me know 'your location hasn't changed in last 30 min-shall i go to sleep'!

<is your GPS turned on outdoors in an open area without trees or buildings?>
all this time I am in a hotel room with a big window overlooking the main street.....so some signals should have percolated inside by now ...but none. I guess I have to physically take the device outside in the open and roam around aimlessly for 10 minutes ?

thus we are beyond the worse case scenario here ....is the TT defunct then ?

If the icon showing your position is grayed out, your GPS is not picking up satellites.

Take your GPS outdoors to an open area free of trees and buildings

You need Open Skies ... not a hotel room!

Go outside and let the unit find a satellite ... it's doubtful it will 'perculate' into am hotel room.

IF the hotel windows have a metallic low-e coating, you'll not be able to receive a signal.

I'm not exactly sure what happened, but following canderson's suggestion, I performed a hard reboot on the machine. Despite the device being idle for 30 minutes in the same location inside the hotel room<and in amsterdam !>, it seemed to have gone into sleep mode. When I returned after an hour, the tomtom was still in the same place, inside the hotel room and on the table.

I tried to wake it up by pressing the power button on the top right. At this time<lo and behold>, I was in Prague. After performing a hard reboot and waiting for 30 minutes or more, nothing happened. The device went to sleep, but when I tried to wake it up again, we were back online.

Fortunately, I didn't have to take it outside, away from the buildings or tree cover. This was a bit puzzling because, back at my home in the Netherlands, which is not in a remote area, the device always picks up the signal, even indoors. Usually, it takes approximately five minutes to do so<if not less>.

Similarly, here in Prague, I'm staying in a well-known hotel, not in the middle of a jungle or far from any radio towers. Yet, the device finally picked up the signal inside the hotel room without needing to be taken outside.

So, it seems the issue is resolved now. I'm fairly certain it was related to the device catching the satellite signal. However, it was concerning that the TomTom device didn't pick up the signal as quickly as it does back at home, especially since it was indoors. But for now, we can consider this issue closed.

Thanks to everyone. This account is just for the archives to record what actually happened.

Do you really remember how long it took the very first time you took the new device out of the box.

that would be an arduous task, because the device is back from the year 2015 - 2016 , so my memory will fail me here.

@Radaway
Any chance you're in the Movenpick?
No I am at the Occidental Praha Wilson, it's near to the city center ....but you mentioned the ''Low e-coating'' on the hotel windows , I don't know why , but that will or would be the case here .
