I purchased the USA and Canada maps when we went for a four month visit three years ago. We will be going back to live in Canada permanently this year. I want to put the maps on an SD card. The maps at present are on the internal memory and am in the process of copying them to my Macbook desktop. What is the best way of putting the maps onto the SD card? At present they are in a folder 'USA_and_Canada', is it just a case of copying the folder as is to the SD card?

Thanks

Brian

Yes, use Finder to copy the USA_and_Canada folder to the sdhc card (I think your model takes the sdhc card and not a sd card). Then insert the sdhc card into the device and boot up the device. Go to Switch maps and ensure USA_Canada is listed. Then select it.

All that said, the card should probably be 8 gb in size and I'd suggest you pay for an updated map. Things change in three years ............ even in Canada.

Thanks for that. I have a feeling that the TomTom One XL (I forgot to mention that) takes a maximum of 2GB. Do I copy just the files or the whole folder?

Well, there are a bunch of files with a folder called USA_Canada, are there not? If so, the whole folder goes on the card. hope it all fits.

Thanks, I found an old 1GB SD card, copied the USA-Canada maps to it and it worked. One thing i don't understand though, with the card in I can only see the USA-Canada maps and cannot change to UK maps unless I take the card out. It seems to default to the SD card slot. A minor point as I am glad I can get the 'across the pond' maps working at all. I was very useful when we drove from BC dow through Washington State (very dusty) and on to Oregon and Portland (lovely city).

If you go to switch maps, is the UK listed?

If not, I suspect you have the application on both internal AND the sd card. If the device detects a sd card installed, it boots from there and uses whatever map(s) it 'sees'.

I have the USA/Canada maps on the SD card and the UK maps on the internal memory. Is it possible to put the UK maps on the SD card as well as the USA/Canada ones?

The One XL is a 2007 model and can only see one location. If an SD is inserted, the internal memory is not available. Tomtom changed this on all newer models, so any newer devices can see both internal and SD simultaneously.

It can only fit a 2GB card, I'm doubtful that USA/Canada and UK can both fit on a single card, so I think swapping like you are doing is the only approach you can take.

Thanks for your prompt reply. It's not exactly difficult is it to switch off and put an SD card in. After all, I can only use the UK maps in the UK and vice versa. I will probably upgrade my One XL after I move (we are having medicals tomorrow so if either of us fail we won't be going anyway, only for a visit to my son in Nelson, BC.
