help a newbie

hi guys i recently got a xl340s from ebay it was a new one in a sealed carton etc and worked great .when i put on computer last home asked if i wanted to update etc to which i did.well now it says maps dont werk and its usless as .tom tom say bad luck as it was from ebay and they are not interested.my option acording to them is spend a hundred bux that i dont have and buy a new map.
any sugestions guys??????????:
