can I go part of the route my way ignoring TT then let TT take me the rest of way instead of forcing TT do go my way from start?

Yep.
That's what I do all the time.
The reason I do that, because around my home, I know ... better than TomTom.
Sometimes I prefer longer route , because it's less busy, less red lights & stop signs. Everyone has their own liking. I guess it's pretty tough to be a programmer for a GPS company.

You can go whatever route you like and the TT device will recalculate. You can do this as many times as you want.
