Anyone know where to go to find out how old a map is?
I am looking to buy a used Tomtom Rider 1 and it has map 870.3391.
The seller said he got it used and he doesn't know how old the map is.

890 came out in May 2012
880 came out 6 months earlier
870 came out 6 months earlier..

In other words: May 2011

Ok. Thanks.
Do you know if that is a US map?
And is this information resdily available somewhere or do you have to belong to a secret club?

You can't tell from the base 3 digit number if it's a US map or not. The last four digits are the specific build that they chose to release at the time of the 3 digit major release, and applies both to North American and European maps of that vintage. In other words, 870.3391 could be either, and has been both.

Obvious question - was the device used in North America? Have the current owner turn it on and see what part of the world pops up if he tries to ask it to navigate somewhere. It'll either be states & provinces or European countries.

THANKS again.
And the guy contacted me and said it did have US maps.
But again where is all of this info coming from?
What is the secret source or do I have to pay big money to find that out?

Secret source? For some time now, TomTom has been bumping their map numbers by 5 for every new quarterly release. So if this quarter is #890, then last quarter is #885, and the quarter before that was #880. We never received a decoder ring here, either ... just figured it out by watching the numeric progression. In a word, it's coming from experience, which is what we offer here (most of the time, anyway!) and which you'll be able to offer here one day too after you've spent some time with your Rider. Heaven knows we can always use a user with Rider experience to chime in now and again when questions come up. None of the moderators owns one.
