VIA 220
Hi All,

This is TomTom VIA 220 from Oz, I have just joined the TomTom Forum Page and hope you can help me resurrect my VIA 220.

I just wanted to say hello from Australia and also see if I can get assistance in gettinng my VIA 220 working again.

It is a VIA 220 that I purchased new in 2013.

The Model Number is 4EN42 Z1230.

The serial number is AP4284A90337.

Underneath the Serial number is another number 4EN4.001.06.

Some years ago the map updates went from TomTom Start to My Connect and I recall it identifying itself as a VIA 1400 as there was no model VIA 220 listed in the drop down selection.

I also recall fixing a problem with a GPS Leap Second 19 year update, I cannot now recall how I did that, I think that was in 2019, I am unsure.

I have a subscription to Speed Camera updates.

I am still given Lifetime Map updates but the last update froze and My Connect says the device is not connected.

I have reinstalled My Drive, I have removed the Home 3 folders.

I noticed that when I connect the USB cable, both the device and My Connect said it was connected, but when attempting to start the download the device, My Connect says it is not connected.

However I now note that when connected to the computer the device takes a charge, however on powering up it either freezes on power up and then shuts down of its own accord, or else takes me to a white screen with a two semi circular arrows like an icon of a refresh symbol.

I tried one user's suggestion of keeping the power button depressed past the drum sound for 10+ seconds to get to the BIOS screen but it wont allow me to do this.

I imagine I have to put new firmware in it but is this what I need to do ?

If I do have to update firmware, I wanted to know how, I have flashed BIOS in a DVD ROM drive and am happy to follow your advice.

First, understand that TomTom thought it necessary to give different names to the same devices in different markets during the era in which your Via 220 was produced -- especially in the Aus-NZ market.

Technically, a Via 220 with an "AP" serial number may also be called a Start 20, Via 1400 or 1405 ... it's a bit of a mess. MyDrive Connect by default just associates the "AP" serial number with one of these names, regardless of the location of the owner, so there may not be a direct correspondence between what you see in MyDrive Connect and what your device was called on the box when you bought it.

That said, I was surprised that your "Via 220" had an "AP" serial number. I thought the Via 220 was always an "AO". Just goes to show how complex TomTom made all of this!

Your 'week number rollover' update would have been performed by MyDrive Connect or its predecessor (TomTom used to call it by a different name).

"I noticed that when I connect the USB cable, both the device and My Connect said it was connected, but when attempting to start the download the device, My Connect says it is not connected."

Let's back up one step to check something. With your device connected, and before you attempt to download any new content, does MyDrive Connect allow you to view the current content of your device as it should do? For example, if you select the "My Content" bar, does it show as installed the map actually installed on your device?

Hi Canderson,

Thank you for your reply.

Yes, most definitely, I can see all of my content, maps, languages, voices etc in My Content.

The difficulties seem to be from when I attempt to install the updates.

I had contacted TomTom Support who said they cleared a number of downloads as i had not updated the device in a while.

In my second contact with TomTom Support they suggested removing the Home3 file which I did.

I should also note that I removed the Micro SD Card and now it says I have no maps. I had actually thought my Europe map was on the SD Card and my Australia map in the internal memory. I may reinstall the Micro SD Card.

But yes, to answer your question, with the Micro SD Card installed, I can definitely see all of my maps, voices, languages etc in My Content.
