TomTom Model(s)
Go App
Hi,

I've been using a competitor's product on my motorcycle. I've now installed an Android Auto display
and am using the TomTom Go app on my android phone for navigation. It works very well and I
prefer the app for downloaded, prepared GPX routes.

That said, the competitor had a warning of upcoming speed limit changes. Is this possible with the GO
app? A very welcome feature.

Thanks

Steve

No, this has never been a TomTom feature. The speed limit changes on the display only when the speed limit changes, and without warning.

Thanks for the quick answer, It's a very nice feature and has saved me money in the past.

I am curious to know what product you were using that supports this feature.

Good device. I like the 'glove friendly' display on those devices. Still nice and bright and clear, like a typical capacitive screen, but without the added inconvenience of special 'conductive gloves' to use it. It's been so cold here lately that I haven't been on a bike with or without gloves for a while, though!

I just wish Garmin's traffic was as good as TomTom's.

I'm considering switching because the TomTom Go is more faithful about following my preplanned GPX routes. The Android Auto makes it much easier to accept and make phone calls. I'm too old school for listening to music, but the music apps are pretty good. And, whenever the phone or app is updated, I get the newest.

It remains to be seen (come on Spring!) whether the display is up to snuff in sunlight.

Thanks again

There are upside/downside issues with the following of *.gpx routes ... and to be fair, when using TT, they aren't 'routes' in the normal *.gpx sense, then are 'tracks'.

*.gpx files come in one or a combination of flavors. There is route (using <rtept> entries), track (using <trkpt> entries), and waypoint (using <wpt> entries). While trackpoints on a TomTom are certainly the way to force a very precise trail of 'breadcrumbs' to be followed, it doesn't allow for any intelligence by the routing engine to deal with closed roads, etc. So extremely high fidelity to a pre-planned route isn't always the best choice. Besides, the files can be positively HUGE, especially when a TomTom creates a new trackpoint coordinate every 1 second! Other devices allow the user to define the time interval to something a little more reasonable.

I still prefer a series of waypoints (a *.gpx file in <wpt> format, similar to the old TomTom *.itn files) - something that TomTom can't handle. It specifies every point you want to visit along your route, but allows the routing engine to use some intelligence about traffic, closed roads, etc. in reaching them in the sequence you specify.

I guess it depends upon where you're riding as to whether that's important, but being directed onto a close piece of road isn't much fun!
